Not Universal June 1, 2010 Gift Card Recipient (San Francisco, CA) Unfortunately, this isn't totally universal. It did not fit my 2009 Cannondale hybrid. I needed some extenders; however, the bike shop I went to in SF did not have any that were long enough. In the end, I bought another rack that was 3x the price, but at least this one fits!
I tried to give it to my boyfriend, who rides a vintage Raleigh, but this "universal" rack did not fit either...
Save some time and money and just bring your bike to a shop, so they can help figure out what works best for you.
Really univeral May 26, 2010 Valery Zubovsky (San Francisco, CA United States) I thought I had a regular bike, and did not think would need a univeral rack. If this rack were not so universal it would not have fit my, what I thought was, regular bike. Really good buy, good quality, and a great price.
Universal...... a bit of a stretch May 15, 2010 Ronald A. Fitzgerald (Central NY) nice construction, solid.. well made. but.. not Universal.. would not mount on my Giant, Cypress bike. But with one small modification, made a good addition to my wife's bike.
must fidget with parts a little May 13, 2010 H.Y. Not too bad - I wasn't sure I would be able to make it fit properly - as noted by other reviewers, the instructions are not useful. But after fidgeting a bit with it, it fit quite nicely on my Trek 7000 and Specialized Vienna, and seems to be quite sturdy. I do not believe the "U" bracket and the 2 individual bracket arms are meant to be used as separate pieces. They must both be used to mount the rack properly. If you don't, the rack will be too short to reach the mounting holes properly.
Here's the way I put it together:
First, the "u" bracket needs to be attached to the bike frame using the center mounting hole - found on the crossbar of your bike frame. You will need to buy a screw for this - my bike used a 10-32 machine screw - the length will depend on how the bracket fits on your bike. I think 1 inch should suffice. Attach the 2 single arms to the "u" bracket using the included screws/nuts.
Next, put the "y" arms onto the main body of the rack. I put the "y" arms on the inside of the rack - looks nicer, and doesn't catch clothing etc. Place the welded side of the arm facing the inside - looks nicer. The rack came with the screws and nuts needed to do this (comes w 8 screws and nuts). Next attach the assembled "y" arms and rack onto your bike frame - using the bottom holes of the "y" arms. You will need to supply these 2 screws. I needed to buy 2 10-32 machine screws - 3/4 inch if you use split washers for a more secure fit. You may need to add washers as spacers so the screw doesn't interfere w the gears. 1/2 inch may work too - I didn't have 1/2 screws but I think they will be ok. Tighten these screws up a bit so the rack doesn't move around. Level the rack, then position the "u" bracket/arm assembly so that the holes line up, and put in the final screws and nuts.
Tighten up all the screws. You're done!
Great! April 29, 2010 J. Shain (FL) For the price I can't complain. It came with all hardware to put it together. Even without instructions, took me less than 30 minutes to put it together and install it on the bike just by the picture on the package. All and all I am happy, It was worth what little I paid for it.
